By Sammy Olumola

“Tonight we are privileged to share the laughter, dreams, passion, vision, wisdom, pain and normal stories of our brothers and sisters in the Dadaab refugee camps,” said John Kilungu, a co-producer of FilmAid’s DADAAB STORIES, a nonlinear, multimedia documentary project charting everyday life in the world’s largest refugee camp.

On April 17, 2013 FilmAid International celebrated the launch of DADAAB STORIES with humanitarian partners at the Sankara Hotel in Nairobi. “Everyone in Dadaab has a story to tell, and this is the place to share these stories,” said Stella Suge, Country Director of FilmAid Kenya. The initiative was inspired by the countless untold stories of refugees living in Dadaab and around the globe.

Acting as an art piece, oral history archive and advocacy tool, DADAAB STORIES brings the daily realities of refugees closer to a global audience than ever before. Despite the difficulty of life in Dadaab, DADAAB STORIES put a human face on daily life in a refugee camp and clearly tell the aspirations and dreams of the refugee community.

Laban Ngetich from Kenya’s Department of Refugees spoke at the event, sharing that access to correct information will empower asylum seekers with information about their entitlements and rights, hence reducing conflict with the law and host communities.

According to Jacqueline Parlevliet, the UNHCR Assistant Representative, about 600,000 refugees are hosted in the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps and 3,000 new Somalia refugees have been registered in Dadaab this year. The numbers increase by the day.

Parlevliet said it is a growing challenge for most humanitarian organizations to support the increasing refugee populations without enough funding. She acknowledged Kenyan authorities and host communities for their relentless support and hospitality in hosting the largest refugee population in the world and thanked them for their respect and compliance with humanitarian laws.

Mr. Bitange Ndemo, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication, affirmed that DADAAB STORIES is a powerful tool not only for entertainment but also for education on social issues.

Recounting happenings during 2007 election violence in Kenya, Ndemo said, “Had we not captured the events of 2007 elections violence on film, we would not have had a peaceful election in 2013. The films and photos of the violence made people fear going back to the violent experience.”

Ndemo’s comments struck a chord with music video “Dear Mr. Peace” featuring the vibrant voices of Dadaab All Stars, a music group of refugees in Dadaab, and the local community celebrating the importance of peace and love. “Dear Mr. Peace” along with other videos featured in DADAAB STORIES were shown during the event.

The presentation also showcased The Refugee Newspaper, a monthly publication by young refugee journalists who tell stories on social-cultural issues, education, and business in the camps.

FilmAid is an international humanitarian media organization that uses the power of film and media to transcend language and literacy, bringing life-saving information, psychological relief and much-needed hope to refugees and other communities in need around the globe.

Through its screening and youth filmmaking programs in Kakuma and Dadaab, FilmAid gives refugees a chance to achieve their true potential by providing access to critical and often life-saving information. FilmAid also trains refugees in filmmaking and media so that they can document their stories and address issues affecting their communities.

For more information and to explore DADAAB STORIES, visit: www.dadaabstories.org

Dadaab, Kenya – March 25, 2013 – FilmAid is proud to announce the launch of DADAAB STORIES, a new interactive, multimedia documentary project charting everyday life in the world’s largest refugee camp. The vast majority of the nearly 500,000 refugees living in Dadaab are from Somalia, displaced by armed conflict, natural disaster or persecution.

DADAAB STORIES is now available at: www.dadaabstories.org

Bringing together video, poetry, music, community journalism and personal blogs on a cutting edge, interactive website, DADAAB STORIES is a living, curated collection of personal stories from one of the most challenging environments on the planet. DADAAB STORIES allows visitors to explore the refugee experience and engage with Dadaab camp through information and imagery.

“Our goal with DADAAB STORIES is to help open up a window between global audiences and the extraordinary and inspiring community in Dadaab, people we’re privileged to work with every day,” says Liz Manne, Executive Director of FilmAid. “Normally the media only shows up in these far-flung, dusty corners of the globe when headlines are screaming. But it's important to know that life goes on in Dadaab every day -- real, human life in all its colors. Stubborn, confounding, rich, beautiful, comic, messy -- often devastating -- yet sometimes glorious. These lives -- and their stories -- are real, they count and they deserve to be known.”

About DADAAB STORIES (www.dadaabstories.org)

DADAAB STORIES is an evolving online documentary and ultimately a collaborative community media project. It is a place for refugees to share their stories with the world. It is an initiative of FilmAid, a humanitarian media organization that has been making, teaching and screening films in Dadaab since 2006.

DADAAB STORIES is nonlinear and multimedia. Stories are told through video, photography, poetry, music and journalism. Everyone in the Dadaab refugee camp has a story to tell, and this is the place to share these stories. Just like Dadaab itself, DADAAB STORIES is always changing, and new content is added regularly.

DADAAB STORIES is a groundbreaking web initiative, which utilizes the Tumblr social media platform in ways that have never been seen before. Accessing Tumblr's enormous, vibrant community will ensure these important stories are seen and shared among a diverse audience.

DADAAB STORIES was inspired by the countless untold stories of refugees living in Dadaab and around the globe. Acting as an art piece, oral history archive and advocacy tool, DADAAB STORIES brings the daily realities of refugees closer to a global audience than ever before.

Managed by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Dadaab serves a population of nearly 500,000 refugees, the majority Somali. Refugees arrive in the camp fleeing armed conflict, disaster or persecution. Following famine and renewed conflict in the region in 2011, over 100,000 new refugees flooded into the camp. More recently, the region has been hit by a series of major security incidents including kidnappings of aid workers and IED explosions.
